The DS version has Debora and like two more monsters but it also has an extremely annoying (THE most annoying) English localization. You're better off playing the PS2 version. And there is a cheat that only exists in the original. But you won't catch me playing the original nowadays. I'd argue the original version of 5 is the real version of the story (though I seem to be the only person on this sub who is driven up the wall by the remake changes). The original also has monster catching, technically, but the list of recruitable monsters is rather small and mostly unimpressive from what I can tell, looking it up. I'd take the original's way of categorizing techniques in the battle menu (the same way DQ7 PSX does it) any day though. The biggest thing the remakes have is party chat and a more streamlined/informative Dharma. #DRAGON QUEST DS VS SNES VERSIONS PATCH#
There also doesn't exist a 100% complete bug free English translation patch for DQ6 (I've never played the original of 6 all the way through). Gameplaywise, the original version vs the remakes of 6 is a tradeoff (moreso than any other game in the series except for maybe 7 but I can't speak to that since I haven't played that remake) since the remakes didn't simply add more content, they also changed and/or removed mechanics. (though the GBC version has more content) I'd also say 1 and 2 are probably best played on the SFC. I would argue the SFC is the best version of 3.
